It's no secret that the past couple of weeks (for me) have been tumultuous. I got diagnosed with mono, I had an ovarian cyst rupture and I genuinely don't believe that it's just bad luck. I think it has a lot to do with my lifestyle and the very real stressors that I have been trying to deal with that lowered my immune system and simultaneously made me susceptible to illnesses like mono.
It's not really possible for me to be on a fitness journey anymore, which makes me sad but I have learned that with mono your spleen gets enlarged, and working out isn't an option because of the risk of rupture (which is really dangerous). So, I can do some light yoga in a couple of weeks and go for a walk every now and then but it's not nearly as much as I was planning on doing. In terms of my ovarian cyst, there's not really much to say about it. It was so painful and scary. They kept me in the hospital and told me I was having surgery, but about 10 minutes before the scheduled surgery they wanted to do a pre-op ultrasound and found that surgery wasn't necessary. At this point I am just glad I didn't have to undergo surgery and that the subsequent risks aren't hanging over my head anymore.
It seems it's no longer a choice for me to focus on my health, both physical and mental. So I'm going to make it as interesting and exciting as possible. I'm going to be diving into different aspects of my own health, whether it's air quality (which is really bad here in SLC), food, social life, mental health, products, etc.
I'm not the most holistic and healthy person. I used to go out to drink quite often and stay out late, but since I've had to give up alcohol my skin is glowing, I have lost weight and I have more energy (even with mono). I am also not the least healthy person, thanks to growing up in Marin County, California. I was exposed to exercise, green juice (yay Nekter!), organic food and we even raised chickens at our house for fresh eggs! But there's still room for improvement. So I'm taking the bull by the horns and I'm going to leap into the world of feeling good, doing right by my body, waking up earlier and going to bed at a normal hour. I'm excited to see how it goes!
My next post in this series will be about air quality, mostly because Salt Lake currently has a toxic fog cloud of pollution that makes me cautious about leaving my apartment. I recently bought an air purifier to try to combat that in my own apartment but I'll be learning what effects air quality has on our mental, physical and general health and what we can do to make it a little less toxic in our own lives. I'm just going to do a ton of research on it and try my best to keep healthy.
Overall, I think we take our health for granted in today's world, letting social and media pressures influence our decisions, rather than rationally thinking through them and deciding what's best for our well-being. I've had my fair share of crazy nights and have a serious FOMO (fear of missing out) but I feel like it's about time I start appreciating and taking care of the body I have for the rest of my life. Plus the hangovers, acne, weight gain and numerous counts of regrettable decision-making are so not worth it.
